Kiawah Island Utility
Aquifer Storage and Recovery Systems
Kiawah Island Utility (KIU) serves the resort
and residential community of Kiawah Island, South Carolina and
relies on a single pipeline to the mainland for its water supply.
Given the size and complexity of the development, and the pronounced
seasonality of the water demand, KIU sought to achieve two critical
objectives:
- Provide an emergency on-island backup to its off-island, single pipe source.
- Develop a practical system for "storing" water during winter months, when usage
is low, for use during spring and summer months, when usage is high.
TSG responded by working with KIU and others to design and install two
Aquifer Storage and Recovery (ASR) facilities on island. These completely automated,
PLC based systems can store up to 60,000,000 gallons of treated water. Both wells have
been in operation since May 2003. By turning to TSG and ASR technology, KIU improved its
customer service and increased the reliability of its system at a fraction of the cost of
a second pipeline or conventional storage.
"In 1999, (KIU) was approached
by TSG to consider what KIU believed was a new concept -
Aquifer Storage and Recovery. TSG conducted a Feasibility
Study
and determined that KIU was actually in need of a means
of peak shaving,
where water could be stored during non-peak periods for
use during peak
periods, instead of investing in more capacity from our
supplier.
Additionally, the water stored in ASR could be used as an
emergency supply.
They made sure the projects went as smoothly as possible
and even when the
unexpected occurred, they were ready to respond to be sure
the job remained
on schedule. Even two years after the first project they
were willing to
make changes to guarantee our satisfaction. I am confident
that we will
maintain a strong working relationship with TSG long into
the future."
